Senior Spaces Survey!

The Richland Library was recently awarded a Senior Spaces grant. We were one of only 6 libraries to receive this grant. It will allow us the funding to create a space within the library for senior citizens and baby boomers to come and have a place they feel is their own. In order for us to purchase items for our Senior Space that would interest the general populace, we ask that you answer this survey if you are in this Senior Age Group. Your honest completion of this survey will ensure that Richland Library's new Senior Space is as great as can be! Just click the link, log into Facebook, and get started! Thanks for supporting the Richland Library :)

Flying into Summer!

This week for our summer reading program, we set up a green screen and took pictures of the kids on a "magic carpet." Then, using a computer program, we were able to make a picture of them flying over a building in Pakistan! This went great with our theme this week, learning about schools and travel in foreign countries. We e-mailed the kids their pictures, so that they can always have a memory of the fun had right here at the Richland Library! Check out some of the pictures!

Boys & Books

One of the challenges I face regularly at the public library, is to find a "good book for a boy."  Sometimes is the parent's request but often it's the boy himself who wants something but isn't sure where or how to find it.    Following a recent request by a parent of a young boy who was "not a reader", I started looking for resources for boys.  Charles London's article in the Huffington Post hit a nerve...I think it's high time to get in tune with boys and their books!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/charles-london/boys-dont-read-except-whe_b_859449.html

Boys DO read... does it really matter if they prefer Captain Underpants and Ripley's Believe It of Not over Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London?  I don't think so.  Encouraging readers of all ages and tastes is essential!

Libraries Are NOT Extinct!

Here is a fantastic article featured in the Chronicle regarding the healthy lives of libraries in the digital age.  Libraries are vibrant, active places of learning and socializing.  It's not just books at your public library anymore!  See if you can find your voice to speak up the next time you hear the statement...
"Who needs libraries?  I can find it all online."
If only they knew how much they were missing!!

"Speech is Powerful"

Just thinking about the impacts of the latest Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church...Having the freedom to discuss weighty issues is something invaluable...having a group of 9 people uphold that freedom is pretty remarkable. Although the actions by the Westboro Group are questionable, at best...and as a person I could not imagine engaging with the group...they have the freedom to say what is on their mind.

As we deal with each other everyday it is vital to be aware of our words. Chief Justice Roberts is spot on..."Speech is powerful". It is the one thing that can connect us or tear us apart. Be mindful of the weight of our words...

Let us know what you think....

Make today Matter...
Have Amber alerts sent to you.
Facts
AMBER stands for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response" and was created as a legacy to 9-year old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, TX, then brutally murdered.
-76% of abducted children who are murdered are dead within 3 hours of the abduction and 88.5% are dead within 24 hrs.

-70% of people with cell phones are eligible to receive wireless AMBER alert txt messages.
-100% of computers can have the AMBER alert ticker downloaded onto them.
-AMBER alerts are active in all 50 states.
YOU MATTER
Protecting children from abduction and locating those who have been abducted is the twofold purpose of AMBER ALERTS. They increase the number of people who can help locate an abducted child or deter predators, and the have caused perpetrators to release the abducted child after hearing or seeing the AMBER Alert. Remember, those first three hours are everything to that child and his or her family.
Your eyes and action could mean the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

SNOW

Out of the bosom of the air,
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodland brown and bare,
Over the harvest-fields forsaken, silent,
And soft, and slow descends the snow.
